Our Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, this album may look more like a difficult academic challenge than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided across 4 different movements and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged album investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often by way of the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—is shot skyward here, carried by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, with full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, its scale feel much greater here, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, you still desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth brightly on the stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string crescendo thuds down with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album is that the listener rarely exactly understand—nor want to predict—where it is going next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally distinct place than where it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, with menacing beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. That trick gets echoed by a different powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that takes time to fully mine but never seem like hard work. While some major pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
